Design Database

This database is a compilation of observations, theory and instruction for designing 'Mech variants and chassis for Battletech and Mechwarrior 2 - Mechwarrior 4. While I do keep a 'variant gallery' of examples, most of this site (and specifically, this database section) is dedicated to teaching the reader (you) to make new designs that will work well for your gameplay. The database is split into a few sections based on the game you're looking for information on - just make your selection at left or below. The Battletech section is pretty straightforward - the big thing to remember is that Level 3 equipment has its own section after the combined Level 1 and Level 2 section on a given page.

The Mechwarrior section has some subsections because the different Mechwarrior games can be very different from one another in various respects. The main Mechwarrior section covers all game-independent information. It contains the most raw info and is the best place to start. You will find pages dedicated to the various kinds of weapons and equipment that can be mounted on BattleMechs and OmniMechs, as well as some lengthy information on design principles and a tutorial. The other four subsections are dedicated to each game: Mechwarrior 2, Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries, Mechwarrior 3 and Mechwarrior 4. Expansion pack information is a part of the main game information and is clearly identified as such. I don't have Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries yet, so a section for that will have to come about later.

Each game-specific section contains a list of important things about equipment and play that is different from the other games. Minor differences between weapons and game-specific weapons are actually covered in the equipment pages; what you'll find in the game-specific sections are usually bits of information of major import that are too lengthy or too diffuse to cover elsewhere. You will also find detailed pages about each chassis in the game, as well as comments on default loadouts and some generalized recommendations for that particular game. Readers will probably get the most out of the total information by reading the Mechwarrior section in its entirety first, then going to the subsection that corresponds to the game they want information on for more details. Hopefully, the navbar at the top of each page should keep you aware of your "current location."
